National Public Housing Museum

National Public Housing Museum

Located on a historic public housing site in Chicago, the National Public Housing Museum preserves a vital and often misunderstood chapter of American history. Centering the lived experiences of residents, the museum reframes public housing not as a symbol of failure, but as a foundation for community, resilience, and opportunity—inviting youth, families, and visitors to reconsider narratives shaped by stigma rather than lived reality.

An introductory media wall anchors the entry experience, transporting visitors into the everyday realities of public housing: who lived there, how communities formed, and what life looked like across generations. A mosaic of diverse and recognizable faces—including Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, and Nas—connects personal stories to a broader cultural legacy, grounding the experience in both intimacy and collective memory.
